Facing: S/E or alternative N/W launches
This is the highest mountain in Corfu and the best site to fly if you like high launches. The best time to fly at this site is at nil wind or soft south wind days. Thermals are quite strong at this site and heights of 3,500ft are easily gained. The lovely beach of Barbati is right under the mountain and usually our landing place. Launching from Pantokrator isn't the easiest thing in the world but if you wait for the right thermal, you shouldn't have a problem. You'll need company to fly here, as an assistant is needed for both launching and retrieving. If on arrival you find out that the wind has changed to North, don't worry, as there is an alternative n-n/w launch as well.
Your choices from here are only limited by the weather conditions, your skills and the miles that you feel like walking afterwards!
Agios Gordios
Height: 380 meters
Facing: W-N/W
Ag. Gordios is one of our favourite sites as the mountain is located just above the sea and is easily accessed by car or motorbike, its position makes it flyable almost every day. In w-n/w wind days you can ridge soar with anything more than 8mph wind. The north ridge exceeds more than 8km and on a good day, altitudes of 900m can be easily achieved. Launching can be a bit tricky, so having some help is necessary, especially with high winds. Landing is relatively easy, as there is a large beach to land on. Although during the midst of summer you should be careful, as the beach is crowded with sunbathers. You'll find us here almost every day, either flying or having a drink at Posidonio Restaurant, waiting for the wind to pick up! Getting a lift up can be arranged and it doesn't take more than 10 minutes to drive up from the beach. Cross-country flights can be achieved on s/w wind days as there is a southern ridge going on for over 35 km. The local cross country record is held here and is about 25 km. Flying above the sea makes the spirits go wild so seeing pilots doing assymetrics, spins, spirals and any other instability maneuvers isn't unusual at all. We also enjoy flying Tandem gliders at this site.
Trompeta
Height: 420meters
Facing: S-S/W
Nice inland site, ideal for thermal flying and cross-country. On light or nil wind days this is the place to be. Surrounded by open fields to any direction taking a thermal up at 1300meters and leaving the ridge is not a big risk. Accessed easily by car or motorbike. If you decide to leave the long ridge (more than 10km) for a small cross country, finding your way back won't be hard as there is a good bus service around the area. You'll find us here on those really hot, non-wind summer days.
Perivoli
Height: 100meters Facing: S/W
Ideal for beginners. Alternative ridge soaring site for those days with very strong s/w winds. If you are going to fly here you need more than 12mph-s/w wind. It offers a beautiful empty beach for landing, so if you need to work up your skills this is the perfect site.
