“Hay, what about Manfred Ruhmer?”
During the price giving ceremony of the European Championships in Millau last summer, Manfred Ruhmer announced that he will not be attending the next World Meet in Hay (Australia) and that he will be flying a little less competition next year. His decision to skip the Worlds in Hay might have been a shock for a lot of people, but he definitely has reasons for it.
First of all he decided to skip the next World Meet because he doesn’t share, and cannot understand, the choice of the place where it will take place. Last year in Brasilia there were lots of spectators and journalists present at launch and/or at goal. The media display during these Worlds was fantastic and that is exactly what our sport needs in order to grow (or at least no to decrease so fast). There were also lots of fun things to do in Brasilia for both the pilots and the people with them. On top of this, the food was excellent and available until quite late! The competition all in all was very good and very fun…so, why on earth take such a step back and choose to fly the next Worlds in the middle of nowhere? There will be very little media coverage (maybe none), the retrieve will take forever (sometimes even if you make goal), there will be very few places to eat if it gets late (maybe none), it will be difficult to have a nice and relaxed atmosphere on “launch” due to the conditions in the paddock (distance, heat, flies…etc.) and there will be not much to do around there.
Now, isn’t that a pity?
Second of all, he would like to show his discontent with the way the voting process was carried out. Unfortunately, the Austrian Federation does not get to express it’s own opinion because they practically don’t get to vote during the meeting; the single German vote counts for both teams. Some members of the latter team absolutely wanted to go to Australia and so did Gerolf Heinrichs from the Austrian team, so they voted for Hay. Still this vote absolutely did not represent the general opinion of the Austrians…it was not democratic!
As weird as it may sound, the Austrian Hang Gliding Team (yes, currently the best team worldwide, almost unbeaten since 1994) is not free to express its own ideas when it comes to voting for the World Championships!!
The Italian Federation was not a 100% sure about which place they would rather go to, opinions where divided. In order to vote quickly enough they decided to leave the decision to luck and ended up voting for Hay after flipping a coin…
As you can see, if the Austrians could have had their own vote – they would have definitely voted for Florida since they know and like the place very much– and if the Italians had either flipped the coin otherwise or had based their decision on different facts, now everybody would be preparing their trips to Florida next year!
Florida has all it takes to hold an excellent World Meet and it would have been a great follow-up to the comp in Brazil. It is important to keep in mind that Manfred has absolutely nothing against the Aussies, no doubt about their abilities to organize wonderful comps or the possible good weather conditions, but it is just Hay. Hay and all the things it lacks in order to offer our small community the atmosphere and the opportunities this important meet needs to make our sport improve (survive?).
So, even though the flying might be good (I really hope so), Manfred has decided to express his disapproval, based on the abovementioned reasons, by not showing up.
Fair enough, isn’t it?
