Hi
Got a case I had with my Swing Nyos RS that I would like some feedback from the community.
I bought a new glider from the nation dealer, I got the Swing Nyos RS since it had the reputation of a very stable glider (with RAST). I had a few flight during late summer 2018 and was happy with the glider.
Then I had a week flying XC in Spain last autumn. During this week I had three frontals, with one of the fronts for sure the complete front collapse all the way back in the lines (passed the RAST wall). The conditions where not very turbulent and no others in the group had any frontals. During the week I did not have any asymmetric collapses.
The frontals came without much warning, normal glide / thermaling without any big pitch moments (the glider does not move much in pitch). The recovery was quite fast and clean.
During my 18 years of flying I never had any frontals like this before, so I though this was strange. I was thinking the high-B glider would be a bit to much for me (came from a Mid-B).
Anyway I wrote a email to the designer who replied very promptly and asked me to send the glider back to Swing immediately. So I did, and some time later I got a new glider instead of the old one.
The feedback from Swing was limited. Trough the dealer I got the following feedback. "The glider did not behave like it should" and after a while "wrong tension on the RAST wall"
So I'm quite happy they discovered a problem with the glider, it means that it feels better to fly the new glider I got (otherwise I think I could not fly this glider further). But I find it strange that production fault like this (if it really is) can slip trough the Swing production and quality check. And I think it is strange that Swing just confirms a problem with the glider and apparently (at least as it seems to me) just accepts the problem and does not check the production or issue a warning.
Btw, I'm in the middle of the weight range of the glider, the harness has the with setting to around 44-45 cm. The glider was like new (no SIV, accidents, water etc) I've been flying Mid-B gliders all my flying career (including Swing Mistral's)
I did fly the new glider in Brazil this year, got one frontal during 14 days. But this was on a thermic day in a area where two valleys meet and you would expect some turbulence.
I must mention that the communication has been trough my dealer, and not directly with Swing after the initial email (something might be lost in translation here). Swing might have information and done mitigation that is not communicated with me. I get the feeling that they took this seriously and I'm happy with the response / fast reply I got from Swing.
So, what does the community think. Is this OK?
Should I just be happy with getting a new glider? I have still have this feeling that this is a kind of problem that should not go trough production. Who knows, it might be others glider with the same problem, the result of frontals of course can be very dangerous.
Other pilots that has seen similar problems with gliders (and not only with Swing)?
Gruss Z
