Flying in Canical
A little history about flying in Canical. This story may not be accurate because you all know that everyone that tells it will change something but here goes:
The "Aeroclube da Madeira" is the regional club for recreational aviation. They were the first club with hang gliding and later they also started with paragliding. But the core activity of this club is indeed around recreational aviation, i mean small private airplanes, mono or twin propeller engine. At those days they were the only club for all these sports. Nowadays there are others.
Is is told that a few years ago, in a great day for northern flights, a group of paraglider pilots started at Porto da Cruz (some speak of hang gliders being there as well but as i said this story may not be accurate) and came soaring all the way along the shore cliffs up to Ponta de Sao Lourenco. The place where that video was shot. I think there are some pictures of this around somewhere.
At the same time, one Aeroclube pilot flying an airplane was passing by Canical and was taken by surprise by the free flight pilots right there in front of him. There was a big risk of air collision. After the airplane got through, the pilot of the aircraft reported to the airport control tower against the free flight pilots even though they were all from the same club.
Who can blame thim? I would too. After all, all that matters is safety. If by any chance the worst scenario happened, free flight in Madeira would be a very difficult thing to happen, because authorities would restrict it.
Let's all learn from these mistakes, be reasonable and make paragliding at Madeira a respectful activity.
Best regards,
Evandro
